Behind the Scenes: IIHF Sports Development Manager

The IIHF has a number of people that work for them, there is a council, there are a number of committees, and staff. Within the staff you have the administration, marketing department, communications, event management and of course there are the people who deal with the actual sport, the on ice product. One of the people is Darryl Easson, the Sports Development Manager for the IIHF.

Darryl Easson is from Hamilton Ontario who went to England for what was originally for six months which ended up becoming an ice hockey career in Nottingham England. Darryl moved in to coaching in England both at the club and the youth international level. In 1999 he completed an IIHF couching course after which he was able to hold coaching clinics and other programs. After receiving this coaching certificate he ended up holding camps for coaches, giving advice in Europe and Asia. After a number of years the IIHF offered him the job as Sports Development Manager which naturally he jumped at.

The position of Sports Development Manager in the IIHF is to promote the game and help coaches with advice in all countries but mostly in ones where the game to trying to grow. Basically what he does is that he sets up and coordinates symposium clinics and seminars for coaches and club managers. These programs are emphasized more for youth coaches to help them to keep the children playing hockey who they have and also help them to recruit more players and help popularize the game of hockey.
