Hungarian national team head coach Rich Chernomaz and his staff have named the roster for this weeks EIHC Four Nations tournament taking place in Budapest, and as usual HC Chernomaz had a couple of surprises.
A number of players who were called in had to miss the training camp because of injuries, illness and personal issues.
After putting an emphasis on youth the next step for Chernomaz has been improving team speed, this is where some of the faster players from the MOL League have a chance at a roster spot when the world championships come around next April.
There were two players, defenceman Nathan Martine and forward Karol Csányi who made the team but will not be eligible to play in next years world championships, as they’re awaiting their Hungarian citizenships.
Also making the national team and looking to make their debuts are Dávid Duschek, István Mestyán, Martin Turbucz and Attila Rafaj. Interestingly enough Duschek sat on the bench during the 2006-07 season as a backup goalie for three games but never stepped on the ice.
Coach's corner
“We are in the process of letting guys go. We were pleasantly surprised with some players, there are reasons that we decided to keep some of them because of the future and not the present. There are some guys that were part of the team last year that won't be here this weekend. One thing that we are trying to improve upon besides youth is the speed, some guys this week will getting their first looks in the national team was based because of their speed,” Rich Chernomaz, national team coach.
