Going into their second to last game of the World Championships the Hungarian U18 girls knew that with a win they would still be in the race for gold but a loss all but eliminates them from promotion back to the A Pool.

The first period started out smoothly as Hungary killed a penalty, late in the first period Germany opened up the scoring on a goal by Hanna Amort to make it 1-0.

In the second period Hungary was not able to kill their second penalty as Emily Nix made it 2-0, less than a minute later Hungary found themselves down by three right at the midway point of the game. Coach Tibor Marton called timeout to try to settle the girls down, however Germany scored a fourth goal before the period was out when Amort put the puck past Renáta Poltzer for her second goal of the game.

The third period was not much kinder to Hungary as Germany scored twice in the opening minutes to go up 6-0, at this time Poltzer was replaced by Yumi Maruyama in net. It looked as if the one bright spot in the game would be that Marauyama would have a shut out for her stint in the game but with seconds left Swikull scored her second of the game for the 7-0 German win.

Coaches Corner

“Before the world championships I said that France, Norway and Germany are in one group and we will be competing against Austria and Slovakia. Despite this were prepared for each game the same way, and in every game we want to play to our best level. Maybe thats what caused us some problems that with an average win we could have been competing for promotion. The game didn’t start bad for us, we had opportunities and we were able to control the game, unfortunately after a turnover Germany took the lead. In the second period started this way as well, when a team cannot score a goal they become impatient which to them becoming undisciplined and everyone tries to win it by themselves, we started to take longer shifts and we strayed from the game plan. The lesson of today was that you have to stick to the game plan and play patiently for 60 minutes. We would like to leave Vaujany with a good taste in our mouths, we would like to upset France in a full house, we owe it to ourselves to concentrate from start to finish” coach Tibor Marton

“Unfortunately the game had the usual script, we were charging ahead and fight for the first goal but the oppnet scored first. However even though we had a lot of goals scored against us we did not fall apart as a team, we lost as a team. We can build off of this for tomorrow, we hope to pick some points” coach Norbert Búzás
