As the MOL League and the EBEL playoffs are in full swing the remaining Hungarian teams are playing the qualification round of the Hungarian Cup. Miskolc is already in since they are the hosts and if Fehérvár is eliminated from the EBEL playoffs by Bolzano then they as well will be in the final four since they are the defending champions. If Fehérvár make it through then there are three Cup spots for the five teams to play for.
In a couple of years this game could be a matchup of two MOL league teams but right now it was a Hungarian Cup qualifying game.
Vasas jumped out to a 1-0 lead with Ciprián Postás setting up Donát Orosz for the go ahead goal. Later on in the period Debrecen was able to tie it up as Mátyás Odnoga put the puck past Zoltán-László Tőke.
In the first minute of the second period Artur Kurilyuk put the visitors up, the score remained the same as the two teams played a relatively balanced game.
In the third Vasas pulled their keeper, János Lajcs for the extra attacker but the veteran Ádám Hetler gave the puck away on the blue line which resulted in an empty net goal for Kurilyuk.
“We have a young team trying to get ready for an adult team. We played hard we will try to get ready for the games the next week,” said the young Vasas head coach Sergei Maslov after the game.
After a couple weeks off Újpest was ready to get back on the ice, unfortunately for the young Vasas squad they were facing a hungry UTE.
It took a bit of time but UTE put a puck past János Lajcs by the way of Cody Crichton after he had taken a pass from behind the net from David Coleman. Lőrinc Farkas and a second Crichton goal made it 3-0 after the first period.
The second period was all UTE as the wore down the Vasas team, Viktor Kovács put one past Lajcs as well as Gergő Bereczki to make it 5-0. Ádám Fekti made it 6-0 and chased Lajcs from the cage as Vasas coach Sergei Maslov switched goalies and sent Milán Rónai on the ice. In a 64 second span Gergő Ványi and Csaba Virág scored goals against the cold goalkeeper.
In the third UTE took the foot off the gas, Donát Orosz scored the lone Vasas goal and ended József Pleszkán’s bid for a shutout. Erik Maklári scored an unassisted goal to set the final at 9-1 in favor of the visitors.
After taking a beating two days earlier Vasas was back on the ice to take on the other MOL team from Budapest.
The Vasas coaching staff decided to go with Milán Rónai in the cage. The first goal did not come until late in the first period as Gábor Kiss took a pass from Artyom Vaszjunyin and put it past Rónai. Before the period was out Vaszjunyin scored two quick goals to make it 3-0 with the second one somehow making it through the Vasas goalie.
The Vasas fought hard through the second which registered zero goals and the two teams entered the third period with score still being 3-0.
Csaba Papp made it 4-0 and Zoltán Pál with some nice stick work made it 5-0. This was the point were the young Vasas team could not stick with Ferencváros and they were visibly tired. FTC scored three more goals before the period was out. Antti Ojanen made it 6-0 with Kiss and Dusán Sijka scoring the last two goals.
“We tried to create chances, in the end it was not pretty but I‘m proud of my team for sticking with them and we stuck with them for 50 minutes,” said Maslov after the game.
“The game started a bit slow for us and maybe we didn’t take the team seriously, we not the most fun game for us,” said FTC forward Zoltán Pál. “We did not play like a team but in the third period we brought it together.”
Artur Kurilyuk opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal to put the home team up 1-0 Later in the period Cody Crichton tied it up 1-1 and before the period was out Lőrinc Farkas made it 2-1.
In the second Ádám Fekti scored two goals to make it 4-2 in favor of the visitors and in the third Crichton’s second of the game put it out of reach for Debrecen. Áron Könczei scored in the last minute of play for the home team to make it 5-2.
After a cakewalk of a game FTC faced a much stronger DAB team.
Less than half a minute into the game Dávid Szappanos put the visitors up 1-0 with Nikandrosz Galanisz following a short time later to double the lead. Before the period was out Andreas Lindqvist scored for the home team on a power play goal.
Gergely Géczi Tied it up with a PPG early on an early second. This was all that FTC had in them as Dunaújváros scored three goals in under three minutes to put the game out of hand. Balázs Somogy started off has he put the puck behind Krisztián Budai, with Tamás Gröschl setting up Róbert Szabados to make it 4-2. Andy Contois scored the fifth and last goal.
