Hungarian Teams fall short in Europe

This past weekend DAB.Docler and Marilyn HC both took part in European tournaments, the Men’s Continental Cup and the Women’s European Champions Cup, respectively. Dunaújváros travelled to their MOL League rival Brasov where they took on KH Sanok from Poland and Prizma Riga from Latvia along with host team. Marilyn travelled to Bolzano, Italy where they faced the teams of Neuilly sur Marne from France, Gric Zagreb from Croatia and along with the host team, Bolzano Eagles.

DAB

DAB.Docler opened up the tournament playing Polish champion Sanok which had two former MOL League forwards Mike Danton and Jordan Knox as well as former Székesfehérvár defenceman Justin Da Costa. Dunaújváros opened up the scoring in the early minutes of the game as Attila Pavuk set up Nathan Martine for the 1-0 lead. In the second period Sanok woke up and started to play as Jordan Pietrus put his team up 2-1 by scoring two goals in the span of less than a minute. Zsolt Azari tied up the game at 2-2 but the two ex-MOL League players gave their team the lead for good at the halfway point when Knox assisted on Danton’s goal. The third period was all Sanok as they scored three unanswered goals to set the final score at 6-2. Knox and Danton would end up setting each other up for goals four and five with Krzystof Zapala registering goal number six.

In the second game of the tournament, which was pretty much a must win game, Dunaújváros took on their MOL League rival Brasov, both teams where very familiar with each and this was guaranteed to be an exciting game. Goals by Zsombor Antal and Árpád Mihály gave the home team an early two goal lead before Nikandrosz Galanisz scored a power play goal to cut the Brasov lead in half. Late in the second period a Csaba Nagy goal put Brasov up by two again. The teams battled hard through the rest of the period and into the third. Penalties hindered DAB’s chances to getting closer but they got a breakthrough when Attila Pavuk scored a late goal to make it a one goal game. But it was not enough as Brasov improved to 2-0 and DAB fell to 0-2.

On Sunday DAB took on Prizma Riga in a game for pride. Dunaújváros took an early 2-0 lead on two Attila Pavuk goals, after Dávid Szappanos and Zsolt Azari also found the back of the net DAB.Docler had 4-0 lead after the first period. A second Azari goal made it 5-0 after 40 minutes with Prizma scoring two goals in the third for a respectable 5-2 win.

Marilyn

In Italy things went similar for Marilyn as in Brasov for DAB. The Hungarian team had a 1-0 lead off of a Lili Pintér goal in the first period against French side Neuilly sur Marne. Two equal strength second period goals gave the French their first lead of the game, and Marilyn was unable to get back into it as a late third goal was scored for a 3-1 victory in favor of Neuilly sur Marne.

The second game of the tournament did not go any better as the Hungarians ran into a buzzsaw that was Bolzano this weekend. Bolzano had a three goal lead after the first twenty minutes on three equal strength goals. Goalie Boglárka Gegesy and Marylin was able to shut out Bolzano in the second period and all through the third up until the last five minutes when the host team scored twice to set the score at 5-0, this would end up being the least amount of goals Bolzano would end up scoring.

Like DAB, Marylin was playing for pride in their last game against Zagreb. Marylin built up an early 4-0 lead as Boglárka Lakatos, Lili Pintér, Tifani Horváth and Zsuzsanna Victor all scored before the 11:03 mark of the first period. The teams started the second period with the Hungarian team up 4-1 but this did not last long as Pintér scored her second goal of the game in the first minute of the second period. Zagreb cut it to 5-2 but a Réka Dabasi brace put the game out of reach by the end of the second twenty minutes. The third period was all Marylin with Dabasi completed her hat trick and set the score at 8-2.
