After clinching the gold medal after a win against Italy on Friday night, playing China was only a formality for Tibor Marton’s team. However for China a win would avoid relegation for sure.
After Anikó Németh started the first four games of the tournament Renáta Poltzer was the starter for the game against China. The Asian country took an early 1-0 lead when they took advantage of some miscommunication on the back end for Hungary as they made it 1-0. The pace of the first period carried over into the second as Hungary had slight edge on the ice but China still held the lead on the scoreboard. Hungary had three minor penalties in the second and with some overlap there were two 5 on 3 power plays for China that they were not able to take advantage of. With just under two minutes left in the second period China doubled their lead to make it 2-0 as the teams headed into the second intermission. The third period was much like the rest of the game as Hungary controlled the puck and had more shots on net but China had a two goal lead. In the closing minutes of the game China picked up a minor penalty and Hungary pulled their goalie, thus giving Hungary a 6 on 4 advantage that they capitalized on as Lili Pintér took a shot from the left faceoff circle that was redirected by Kitti Trencsényi to cut the China lead in half. China ended up scoring an empty net goal in the closing seconds to avoid relegation.
The best player for team Hungary was Kitti Trencsényi.
