After a come from behind solid win against Croatia, Hungary was not able to take advantage of their chances against Australia.
Head coach Attila Hoffmann stuck with the hot hand, going with Krisztián Budai in net for the second game in a row, after only letting in one goal against Croatia. Hoffmann did tweak the lines with only keeping the first line the same.
In the first period both teams had scoring chances as well as power play opportunities but neither team was able to put the puck past the opposing goalie. The teams started the second period tied at 0-0, but things got interesting as the period went on. The period started much like the first, Australia picked up a penalty but Hungary was unable to score. Ákos Kiss was finally able to break the ice when he took a pass from Imre Peterdi and from the baseline shot the puck past the goalie from a tight angle goal. At 20:16 Jordan Gavin tied it up for Australia when he skated through the Hungarian defence and slipped the puck past Budai, Sean Jones made it 2-1 after Australia won the ensuing faceoff. It didn't take long for the third goal either as Australia managed to flip the game from being down one to being up by two in a span of 64 second when Steve Best scored.
The third period was much like the first, neither team was able to score and Hungary did not take advantage of their power play, Australia had started to play much more defensive in an effort to preserve the two goal lead. The fourth period was much like the second, Jones scored his second of the game when he skated through the Hungarian defence, this pretty much put the game out of reach for Hungary as they were chasing the score the way. Jones completed his hatrick soon after, Hungary got a glimpse of hope when Tamás Lencsés scored a second Hungarian goal to get them back within three but that was as close as they were going to get. Liam Jeffries ripped one form high in the slot and Michael Haynes scored the final goal to make it 7-2. Ákos Kiss was named player of the game for Hungary.
Hungary is back playing tomorrow at 14:00 in a must win game against Argentina,All information about the tournament can be found here.
Nobert Fekecs-“Unfortunately we were not lucky today, everything went their way for them tonight and nothing went our way. Our shots did not end up in the back of the net couple of times, if those pucks bounce our way, we have a chance to take the lead. In inline hockey a two goal lead is not that big so we were mostly relaxed however we were chasing the result. We really needed the goal but they scored instead. Maybe they wanted it more than we did may be they stuck to their game plan better. Because of the goals we conceded we did not stick to the game plan, because of this we started to be more stressed and we started to make mistakes which they took advantage of unfortunately.”
