Over the weekend Hungarian Women’s national team player Dorottya Medgyes signed a letter of intent to continue her studies as a student/athlete at the University of North Dakota.

The Women’s hockey program at the University of North Dakota is one of the premier NCAA programs under the leadership of head coach Brian Idalski. The school is located in Grand Forks, North Dakota and the team competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

“The U of ND got in contact with me after last years world championships, originally they wanted me to attend the university in the fall of 2016, but because of an unfortunate incident the coaching staff asked if I could join the team a year earlier than originally expected. I had to quickly fill out my application and get all my paper work in order so I could be eligible to play, right now I’m just waiting to graduate high school and get my final grades to the NCAA to get cleared academically.” said Medgyes

What is known for sure is that Dorottya will be playing in NCAA hockey in the future, its just not known yet if it will be from the start of the 2015-16 school year of the following year. If she has to wait a year she has a number of backup plans both from the academic side as well as the hockey side, one of which would be her playing in Sweden.

Medgyes looks to be the first women who grew up in Hungary to play NCAA Division 1 hockey. Despite not growing up in the following men have played NCAA D1 hockey and represented Hungary, Roger Holéczy (Northeastern), Andrew Sarauer (Northern Michigan) and Nathan Martz (New Hampshire).
