MOL League Player of the week: Janis Kalnins

2014.10.09. 12:23 |

This past week DAB.Docler had two hard games in which they beat UTE 5-2 and Nové Zámky 2-0. In both games Dunaújváros’ goalie Janis Kalnins played outstanding. Kalnins stopped 38 out of 40 shots against Újpest and had a shutout against the prolific scoring team of Nové Zámky.

This is Kalnins’ second season in Dunaújváros after joining the MOL League side from his home club of Metalugrs which plays in the Belarusian league. Last season was a bit interesting since DAB had two outstanding import goalies with Peter Sevela as well, the club would either dress one of the other import for games, but now that Sevela has his Hungarian citizenship DAB has the luxury of dressing both of them.

Kalnins was also in the Latvian Olympic training camp but in the end the national team decided to go with more experience players.

The young keeper who will be turning 23 at the end of the year had a goals against average of 1.81 and a save percentage of 94.3 last season, which were all great numbers. This is season it looks like he is the number one keeper in the early part of the year with improved numbers of 1.79 GAA and 95.2 save percentage.

Look for Kalnins to keep up the good work and to carry the team to a nice season.
