After starting the U18 Division 1/B world championships with a win in Asiago against Korea, Glen Williamson’s boys were back on the the ice 24 hours later against Ukraine.
As he has done in years past head coach Glen Williamson will most likely be switching goalies for every other game. Getting the start for the second game was Dávid Kovács with Martin Szeles as the backup.
The game started a bit bumpy for Hungary as Ukraine took a 1-0 lead about five minutes in however just over a minute later Hungary tied it up by the way of a Marcell Révész who skated in and shot the puck bar down, and it trickled in. Later in the period Hungary was on their first power play of the game when Márk Almási took a cross crease pass from Donát Szita and tapped the puck into the empty net to go up 2-1.
In the second period just like in the first period Ukraine scored about five minutes in, to tie the game up at 2-2. Through the rest of the second and into the third period both teams were working hard for the go ahead goal. There were a number of power play chances for both teams but Hungary took a 3-2 lead when Patrik Kiss put a Bálint Horváth rebound past the goalie. Late in the game Hungary had a 5 on 3 power play that they took advantage of when Renátó Tóth set up Kiss for a goal down low, Kiss only had to tap the puck into the empty net to put Hungary up by two goals. With just under two minutes left in the game Ukraine called timeout and pulled their goalie for the extra skater. Brúnó Kreisz scored an empty net go to make it 5-2 and sealing the win for Hungary, in the closing seconds Horváth tacked on one more goal with a nice snipe after he skated in from the right wing.
Goalie Márk Kovács was named the player of the game for Hungary.
Glen Williamson: Yesterday was a speed game, both teams were nervous on the first day. Today we played a Ukraine team that was big, we had some penalty problems but our goalie played great and kept us in the game. We had a great compete level and great team spirit. I have never seen the Division 1/B play at such a high level before.
