U18: Hungary comes up short against France

2015.04.18. 19:29 |

After being already demoted after the loss to Norway Hungary took on France in one last chance to get a win.

Gergely Bors got the start from Glen Williamson with Viktor Török sitting out the game because of an injury. Hungary started the game well but France took the early lead when Jordan Bougro beat Bors for the goal. Minutes later Hungary had a powerplay but they were unable to convert on it. Alexandre Teixeira made it 2-0 for the French squad as they were taking advantage of their scoring chances. Gergely Bors was able to keep within striking distance of the French team as the teams entered the second period.

In the middle second period Hungary kept on collecting penalties but luckily the penalty kill was performing well. However France made it 3-0 for their only powerplay goals of the game when Gabin Ville put the puck into the back of the net, minutes later Jean Gleizes had put France up 4-0 and it looked like they had locked up the win. Hungary finally got onto the scoreboard early in the second half of the game when Patrik Kiss scored an unassisted goal. With under a minute left in the period Hungary cut the deficit to two goals when Ákos Kiss scored a shorthanded goal.

The momentum that they had picked up in the second half of the second period Hungary was not able to carry that over into the third period. Hungary took a couple of penalties that did not really help, with five minutes left in the game France scored their fifth goal of the game that set the final score and meant that Hungary would not win a game in this years tournament and would be relegated back down to Division 1/B one year after winning promotion.

Coaches Corner
Glen Williamson- “France is a confident team with great team speed and they came at us hard, we matched them in competitiveness, we played really well but once they were up three 3-0 it was hard to get back, I give credit how they gave everything for their country and nation.”

Romain Guibet- “ The goal was to stay in the group this was just a bonus to get the medal, this past year was a lot of sacrifice for our team this year. This team had a lot of fighting spirit and worked hard every game.”
