After beating Poland in the morning the Hungarian U20 national team take the late game was well in the Wednesday doubleheader in Újpest.
Head coach Rich Chernomaz gave Kristóf Dobos the start in net in place of Gergely Arany who was scratched for the game, the backup was Gergely Bors. The coaching staff made a couple of other changes as well, Philipp Felföldy, Norbert Antal and Márton Papa were scratched as well, replacing them were Noel Fischer, Dániel Papp and István Szűcs.
The game started out as an uptempo back and forth match, the fans did not have to wait long for the first goal as István Terbócs made it 1-0 just before the four minute mark. The game had a nice physical flare to it as both teams had scoring chances, Hungary was on the power play with less than five minute to play in the period when Poland forced a turnover near their blue line, the Polish skater skated in tie the game up on a shorthanded goal. Minutes later Hungary again was on the powerplay and again Poland scored a shorthanded goal on a carbon copy play as before. This time however Hungary managed to score a powerplay goal by the way of Terbócs.
Hungary continued where they left off with Balázs Varga scoring in the first minute of the second period when he slipped a Bence Bödök rebound past the Polish keeper. Both teams had power play opportunities throughout the second period, Hungary opened up a two goal late in the period as Terbócs completed his hattrick off of a pass from András Herszényi.
The Polish goalie made a couple of big saves but an Erik Keresztury goal put Hungary up by three and what looked to be an easy win. The pace of the game picked up for the next could of minutes as Poland scored to come back within two goals, but a second Keresztury goal made it 6-3. Poland take advantage of a mental mistake by Hungary to make it 6-4, neither team scored in the last ten minutes of the game as Hungary ended up winning the sloppy game by two goals.
Opinions:
Rich Chernomaz-"The first we got off to a quick start and had a two goal lead but became sloppy, in the second and third periods we stuck to the game plan and played very hard, they didn't have much of a chance after the first thirty minutes. In the second game I was discouraged because we were making sloppy passes, but got back on track in the second and third periods, it was an ugly win but we scored enough goals to win.”
Erik Keresztury-"We started the game slow, we made a number of mistakes which was reflected in the two shorthanded goals, in the first break we made a number of chances and stayed within the system. We knew that if we stick to the game plan then we can win."
