Hungary traveled to St.Pölten for two exhibition games against Austria who is playing two levels above them.
Rich Chernomaz gave Gergely Arany the start in the first exhibition game with Kristóf Dobos as the backup. Dániel Vizi, Donát Szita, Patrik Kiss, Bence Kiss, Márk Szaller and Kevin Szabad were all scratched for the game, also not playing was Vilmos Galló who will be joining the squad later and Krisztián Szabó who will not be making the World Championship roster because of a concussion.
The game started off great for both teams as the penalty killing units were working, however neither team was able to score in the first twenty minutes. Austria scored in the opening minutes of the second period when the Austrian player skated in and slipped the puck past Arany for the lead, later in the period the home team doubled the score after a scramble in front of the net and a rebound was stuffed in. In the closing minutes of the middle period Austria went up 3-0. Hungary came back into the game with a goal by István Terbócs but Austria answered back to to stay ahead by three. Phillip Felföldy scored late in the game to cut it to two goals but in the end Austria scored an empty net goal to make it 5-2.
Coaches Corner
Rich Chernomaz: We were straight up beaten today, some of the guys were not paying attention to what we had discussed and did not stick to the game plan. Guys can not go off the page and not pay attention. We had a lot of breakdowns. There were guys who took a step forward in making the team and there were guys who hurt themselves, there might be some surprises when the final roster is announced. One forward who was not on the team in November played well and and took a step up.
