After losing to France in a shootout on Saturday the Hungarian Women’s team was facing Denmark for the Gold medal.
The first period was a scoreless twenty minutes in which Hungary was not able to convert their power play opportunities. The Hungarian fans had to wait until the midway point of the game for any goals to be scored. Fanni Gasparics took a pass from Bernadett Németh and skated in all alone from center ice, deaked out the Danish goal for nice breakaway goal and the 1-0 lead. Minutes later Réka Dabasi doubled the lead for what looked to be an easy game the rest of the way.
Five minutes into the third period Denmark was able to get one back when Nielson picked out the top corner on a well placed shot. In the closing minutes Denmark looked to have found an extra gear as they tied up the game at 2-2 on a power play, but the celebration was short lived as Gasparics struck again twenty nine seconds later for the winning goal after a scramble in front of the Danish net she managed to poke the puck across the goal line.
Coaches Corner
“The girls came out we played a great first period and in the second period we found some goals that could build off of, I think going into the third period the girls were a little nerves they haven't been in this situation before but give them credit they found a way to win.” Dwayne Gylywoychuk
