Hungary opened their preparation for the 2016 world championships with the hockey marathon which kicked off with a game against Austria
Head coach Rich Chernomaz gave Zoltán Hetényi the start between the pipes, making their senior national team debut was forward István Terbócs, defenseman Kalvin Sagert and Zsombor Garát and goalie Ádám Vay.
The game started out well for Hungary as on the second shift of the game at exactly the one minute mark Márton Vas opened up the scoring when he put his own rebound in from the doorstep of the Austrian goal, it didn’t take long for Hungary to double the lead. Bence Stipsicz gave the puck away in the Austrian end, as the Austrians were trying bring it out János Hári picked their pocket skated down the left wing, squared the puck back to the blue line where István Sofron sent an absolute rocket onto the net that Kickert had no chance of saving. On of the four debutants, István Terbócs made it 3-0 after he parked himself in front of the Austrian net and deposited a feed by Ladislav Sikorcin from the corner.
The second period started a bit slow for Hungary as Austria was able to create chances but nothing came of it. In between penalty kills Ádám Vay came in to relieve Hetényi in net. The game went back and forth in the rest of the period but after a scramble late in the period Vilmos Galló made it 4-0 for Hungary.
The third period was very balanced this will be the period that the coaching staff will look at the most when they look back the tape as there were a couple of powerplay and penalty kill opportunities. Austria hit the post and Galló tried to lift the puck but ended up putting the puck in the 12th row of the stands, on the following rush Sebők got past the Austrian defence but got tangled up with Könczei who was trying to get out of the way. In the end Hetényi and Vay combined for the shutout win.
