Hungary pulls out win against Belarus

With the way the tournament as has gone for both Hungary and Belarus this game was a must win if they wanted to stay in the A-Pool. They were hoping to pick up their first A-Pool win since February 3rd 1939 which was an 8-1 win over Belgium.

Head coach Rich Chernomaz had Krisztián Nagy and Csanád Erdély back in the lineup, Frank Banham and Zsombor Garát were scratched along with Zoltán Hetényi. Miklós Rajna was named the starting goalie with Ádám Vay as the backup.
Early in the game Hungary went up 1-0 when Dániel Kóger picked up a loose puck in front of the Belarusian goal, fed it back to Gergő Nagy who put it past the goalie. Minutes later with Bence Szirányi in the penalty box János Vas tried to center a pass to Andrew Sarauer but a Belarusian player stuck his stick into the pass and put it past his own goalie to make it 2-0. Belarus made it 2-1 when Geoff Platt put a rebound in for a power play goal.

In the early part of the second period, both teams had a power play opportunity however neither of them took advantage of it. Belarus tied the game up at 2-2 when a puck was passed back across the crease and Gavrus lift the puck over Rajna’s pads. After not taking advantage of a power play Bence Szirányi sprung Balázs Sebők who walked in on goal and slipped it past the keeper to make it 3-2. Minutes later Hungary went up by two goals when Vilmos Galló picked up a dumped in puck skated in, faked a pass to János Vas and snapped it past Kevin Lalande. With Hungary up 4-2 Belarus switched goalies as Vitali Koval came in for Lalande. In the closing minute of the second period with Hungary on the power play István Bartalis got cracked in the face by Yevenko who got 2+2 for high sticking.

Hungary was not able to score on the five on three power play that carried over from the the second period or the four minutes that was attached to the Yevenko penalty. After the midway point of the period Belarus started to pick up the pace as they tried to find that third goal for themselves. In the closing minutes of the period Belarus pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, later they also had a power play which made it a 6 on 4 advantage for them. János Vas attached an empty netter to make it 5-2.
